Paul Pagk

The drawings of Paul Pagk, created as a daily practice, may seem at first spontaneous and even slightly nonchalant, but a more sustained viewing reveals a great mastery of line, color and sensation. Pagk seeks to articulate the notions of poetics, time and space. Each drawing generates a field of visual tension between intimacy and immensity, geometry and organic forms, strength and fragility. The lines and varied reflective surfaces created by the multiple materials employed (dry pastels and bold, graphite, gouache, watercolor, marble...) open a visual field emanating light and atmosphere, a narrative space that the viewer - with his own background - can further elaborate on. Pagk avoids perfect executions, smooth surfaces and perpendicular lines. It is precisely the imperfections, the unexpected and the surrealism that make his work so intense and attractive.

Paul Pagk was born in England in 1962, then lived in Vienna and France. At the age of 26, the Anglo-American artist moved to New York, where he still works today. While being based in Manhattan, Pagk never fully shed his European affinities, which he acquired during his childhood spent in museums and during his studies at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Working with supports and materials as diverse as paper and linen canvas, pencil, watercolor, gouache, soft and oil pastels, and oil paints, Pagk creates visual, intellectual, and meditative spaces that engage both body and mind.

The art of Paul Pagk is deeply conscious of the history of abstraction and minimalism, but resolutely contemporary in his conceptual and pictorial approach.
