Ellen Meers

Ellen Meers graduated from KASK in Ghent in the summer of 2021 with several series of works that balance on the borderland between graphics and painting. Ellen starts her works as classical, analogue graphics: namely monotypes. She prints sheets of paper in different sizes with colour areas and line structures in vibrant colours. On these monotypes, she draws and paints enigmatic symbols that fluctuate between recognisable shapes and unfamiliar silhouettes. Underlying these symbols are anecdotes and memories from her own childhood or stories that family members confided to her during interviews. Ellen creates her symbols like lemmata in a reference work. Placed side by side, they form the story of a particular moment, but captured in enigmatic images that together are reminiscent of the hieroglyphs of the ancient Egyptians. As such, they are also building blocks for the viewer to put together their own narrative or memory, precisely because the shapes have a mysterious but also recognisable and open character.
